Horoscope for Different Roles within a Creative Agency
To allow our students to better understand themselves before deciding which path to pursue upon their graduation from MAD School, we have reposted an article from a writer who works in the creative industry and has identified various roles suitability according to the horoscope characteristics of each individual.
Just for fun and so please do not treat this as something cast in stone.
The Art Director
No, he is not the person who shouts, "cut" in movie production. He is someone who designs.
He designs all the advertisement, artwork, brochures, etc., with the use of all available design software and coming out with something that can resonate with the people the ad is targeting at.
Most of the time, he will work with a copywriter (see below) or website programmer to decide on the art direction for a particular campaign.
In short, he is the person who designs and decides what advertisers want you to see, apart from the things you wanted to see, on your newspapers, social media, tv, etc.
Such roles are present in advertising/creative agencies or media owners like Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

A copywriter is the one who comes out with all the words on an advertisement.
He has to come out with creative (sometimes) and engaging stories so that the person looking at the ad will continue reading, and knows what he is reading about.
Usually the artwork of an ad will capture your attention but it is the message of the ad that will eventually turn the person into a customer.
A copywriter usually works very closely with an Art Director so that they can come out with complementing work together that will achieve the maximum efficiency of an ad.
Apart from agencies, a copywriter is most commonly found in newspaper, magazines or content publisher like Singapore Press Holdings, MediaCorp, Yahoo, etc.

The Account Executive/Manager
They are the ones who understand the client inside out; what they sell, who are the competitors, what is the industry doing, what is the brand direction, etc.
They also need to hold countless meetings with the clients to thoroughly understand what is needed before coming up with a brief to allow the creative department to do their job.
Together with the research folks, they provide insights, research, direction, etc. to make sure that the marketing campaign of their clients are effective and in line with the branding of the clients.
In short, they are the sales people of an agency and definitely a vital role in charge of bringing in the money that pays the salaries of everyone.

The Creative Director
Usually the head of the creative department that consists of the art director, copywriters, etc.
They strategise advertising campaigns, provide the direction of ads, assign projects to individual team members; everything that a manager does in a normal setup.
They need to work closely with the Account Management team to make sure that the campaigns are in line with what the clients have in mind and that kpis are being achieved.

The Media Buyer / Planner
They are the in charge of the buying of slots/space on advertising platforms e.g. radio, newspaper, social media.
They work closely with the creative & research team on the types of medium needed for the campaigns and also the clients on the budget and kpi needed.
Depending on agency, planners sometimes double as the role of an account executive and liaise with the clients to create briefs for the creative department.
Did I also mention that they are usually the ones who receive festive goodies like Christmas log cakes, asked to go out for an all-paid-for drinking session, brought out for fancy lunches from the sales person of media owners e.g. Yahoo, TV station, radio stations, magazine. This is because these guys indirectly control the budget since they have a certain degree of influence over the ad spend of their clients.

The Freelance Graphic Designers
These are entrepreneurs in their own rights. They do not work for any single agency & does work for different clients.
Most of the time they will be getting their work (and money) from small-medium enterprises (SME) that do not see the need to engage an agency to do their ad-hoc projects.
In short, they are account executive, art director, creative director all merged into one.
There is no need for a fixed office and they usually work from home, a Starbucks cafe or perhaps on a beach bench along Bali finest beach. Being freelancers, they more they work, they more they earn.
Some freelance graphic designers even have a day job and does designing as a part-time hobby. If you have the skills and contacts, why not?
